How did we judge a face? What made someone look like a ‘mug’? And why were some mugshots so alluring? Sinners at Dark Gallery CPH invited visitors to confront their own biases, challenging the way we perceived guilt, innocence, and attraction.

Gallery visitors were challenged to distinguish between the innocent and the guilty from a wall of mugshots. Some of these images were generated by artificial intelligence (AI), depicting people who did not even exist. How often were you deceived, and how effectively did AI exploit our pre-conceived notions? The true stories behind the mugshots were revealed through Augmented Reality (AR) when visitors scanned each image with their phone.
On the opposite wall, visitors were asked to identify which of the ‘jailbirds’ they found too sexy for their shirt. But did learning about their actual crimes—revealed by scanning the images—alter their attraction?
Beyond exploring how appearances shaped our judgments—whether evoking attraction or repulsion—gallery visitors were invited to create their own mugshots. By tagging in a social media post or comment, they could enter a competition for a free AI workshop with Dave Feral.
